The United States Marine Corps announces the passing of General Michael J. Williams, USMC (Ret.), 28th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, who died peacefully on December 6, 2025.

General Williams devoted more than 40 years of his life to defending our nation. From his youthful beginnings as an enlisted sailor and commissioning in the Marine Corps to his eventual ascent through the ranks to a four-star general; his career was marked by combat service, humanitarian leadership, and strategic stewardship.

He commanded Marine Aircraft Group 26 during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, led the 2nd Force Service Support Group, and directed humanitarian relief efforts under Joint Task Force 160 for 44,000 Haitian and Cuban migrants at Guantanamo Bay. As Assistant Commandant from 2000 to 2002, he provided steady leadership, guiding the Corps into the 21st century during times of global transition.

“General Williams embodied our core values of honor, courage, and commitment," said the Commandant of the Marine Corps. "With over 40 years of selfless service, from fighter missions in Vietnam to serving as our 28th Assistant Commandant, he etched his rightful place in our Corps' history. We honor his life, his service, and his legacy.”

Among his many awards were the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Combat “V”, and Air Medal with 25 Strike/Flight numerals reflecting service from Vietnam to the Gulf War and beyond.

He is survived by his loving wife and childhood sweetheart, Barbara Williams, his son Matthew, daughter in-law Kim and grandsons Evan & Aiden Williams.

The Marine Corps will release additional information regarding Gen William’s memorial service and obituary as it becomes available. Marines, veterans, and citizens are encouraged to honor General Williams’ memory by reflecting on his lifetime of service and sacrifice.
